Welcome to the Tamar Bicycle Users Group (TBUG) — an incorporated not-for-profit organisation dedicated to building a stronger cycling community and increasing awareness, safety and active transport in Launceston and the wider Tamar region. For over a decade we’ve connected people who love riding, from casual cyclists to commuters, families, and adventure seekers, through fun social rides, practical workshops and community events while advocating for better cycling infrastructure and safer streets for everyone.
We organise a diverse calendar of rides that suit all ages and abilities, from gentle off-road trails around Launceston to longer countryside and themed excursions, and everyone is welcome to join, whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been riding for years. We also champion cyclists’ voices in local government and partner with organisations like Bicycle Network and the City of Launceston to help shape a healthier, happier and more connected region.
TBUG is a member-based community, and your involvement makes a real difference, joining helps support more rides, stronger advocacy and exciting events. If you’d like to ride with us, help grow our community, or contribute to making our city better for all road users, we’d love to have you on board.

Would you like to start cycling more?
Cycling is an easy, low-impact way to improve your health, boost mental wellbeing and save money on everyday travel. It helps reduce traffic congestion, supports safer and quieter streets, and cuts emissions by replacing short car trips — making cycling a simple choice that benefits you, your community and the environment.
We know starting to cycle can feel daunting, but Launceston has a growing network of trails and off-road paths to help you build confidence. Our dedicated cycling page shares practical tips, local routes and advice to help you get started and enjoy a more active, healthy lifestyle

Our partners at Bicycle Network have a lot of information about e-bikes.
e-bikes
Despite all the bad press e-bikes are getting they are not fundamentality dangerous. There’s a clear difference between e-bikes and electronic motorbikes and other illegal electric powered devices.
A proper e-bike motor can’t exceed 25km/h (though you can obviously go faster by peddling very hard or rolling down a hill for example) and most models require pedal assistance to provide that power. They are great for commuting and enabling older riders to keep riding. They also work really well for taking the edge of the hills of the Tamar Region.
TBUG encourages people to buy e-bikes and e-scooters from local bike shops instead of on-line as they are assembled by professional mechanics and are ready and safe to ride.
